Riders Of Light

Hoy os traemos una entrevista al Lightpainters Tom Hill de 39 años residente en Newcastle ( Inglaterra ).

Today we bring you an interview with Lightpainters Tom Hill, 39, who lives in Newcastle (England).

Tom tiene una técnica muy reconocible sobre todo por sus maravillosas esferas de luz donde nos sorprende siempre con una recital de formas geométricas , simetría y trazos diferentes a lo habitual.

Seguro que os gustará conocer un poco mas de el.

Tom has a technique recognisable above all for his wonderful light orbs and always surprises us with a spectacle of geometric forms, symmetry and interesting textures.

1º ¿Cómo descubriste el Light Painting ? –  How did you discover Light Painting?

Yo descubrí el Light Painting gracias a mi novia que conocia a Ian Hobson (Hob), un artista muy famoso en el campo del Light Painting.  Me encantaron las fotos que hizo pero no intenté hacer mis propias fotos hasta después unos años.  Después, a causa de mi fotografía paisajística, yo conocí a Mike Ridley, otro artista excelente del noreste de Inglaterra y compartió conmigo unas técnicas básicas.  

Comencé seriamente a hacer mis propias obras hace un año cuando estaba de vacaciónes en Menorca.  A mi novia le gusta mucho montar a caballo entonces como estaba solo algunas tardes, fui a un edificio abandonado con unas herramientas básicas de Light Painting, y fue en ese momento que descubrí mi amor por Light Painting.

Desde entonces, mucha gente me ha inspirado y estimulado y quiero mencionar algunos artistas que admiro;  Tim Gamble, Chris Thompson, Mart Barras, Dan Whittaker,Phill Fisher, Pala Teth, Eric Paré, Xiao Yang, Denis Smith, Carles Calero y por cierto RidersOfLight!  También a mis amigos locales como Mike Ridley, Dave Thompson, Robyn Flemming, Claire Harper and Rob McAvoy.

I was introduced to light painting through my girlfriend who knew Ian Hobson (Hob) a well known artist in the light painting scene.  I loved the pictures that he did, but I didn’t make any of my own for a few years.  Then, through my landscape photography, I met Mike Ridley, another excellent light painter from the North East of England who showed me some basic techniques.

I started seriously making pictures of my own about a year ago when I was on holiday in Menorca. My girlfriend likes horse riding so I got to spend a few afternoons on my own, in an abandoned bomb store with a set of basic light painting tools, and it was here I developed my love for light painting.

Since then, I’ve been encouraged and inspired by more people than I can name, but I’d like to mention a few to check out; Tim Gamble, Chris Thompson, Mart Barras, Dan Whitaker, Phill Fisher, Pala Teth, Eric Pare, Xiao Yang, Carles Callero and RidersOfLight.  Also, Mike Ridley, Dave Thompson and Robyn Flemming for many fun nights out.

2º ¿Por qué sigues practicándolo? – Why do you keep practicing it?

Creo que, como la mayoría de Light Painters, me volví adicto a la adrenalina de no saber el resultado final de la foto hasta el momento de cerrar el obturador.  También, esta forma de arte cambia muy rápidamente, con nuevas técnicas y estilos para practicar, entonces es siempre estimulante.  

I think, like most light painters, I’m addicted to the excitement of not knowing what the final photograph is going to look like until you close the shutter.  Equally, I love the fact there are so many different styles and techniques so it never gets boring.

 

3º ¿Cuál es tu herramienta de luz preferida? –  What is your favorite light tool?

Una pregunta sencilla.  Uso un paraguas LED para hacer todos mis esferas, por lo tanto es mi herramienta preferida.

An easy question.  I use an LED umbrella for all of my orbs so it has to be my favorite tool.

4º ¿En qué lugar del mundo te encantaría practicar este tipo de fotografía?

Where in the world would you love to practice this type of photography?

Un montón de lugares!  Me encanta añadir elementos de light painting a espacios naturales particularmente hermosos por lo tanto me encantaría hacer Light Painting en cañón de Antelope en los EE.UU, Petra en Jordania, en el desierto o en un bosque de árboles rojos.  También, algunos de los edificios abandonados en Europa parecen extraordinarios para hacer light painting.

Tons of places!  I love trying adding elements of light painting to beautiful natural environments, so would love to light paint in antelope canyon in America, Petra in Jordan or in a forest of redwood trees.  Equally, some of the abandoned buildings in Europe look amazing for light painting,

5º ¿Qué valoras más en una fotografía? ¿La idea, el resultado final o la técnica utilizada para llegar a ella? Elige para ti la más importante.

What do you value most in a photograph? The idea, the end result or the technique used to reach it? Choose for yourself the most important.

Para mi, el resultado final es lo más importante.  Algunos de mis fotos favoritas son técnicamente muy sencillas, pero la composición es fuerte o el light painting queda particularmente bien en estos casos.

For me, the result is the most important thing. Some of my favorite shots are technically extremely simple, but the light painting suits the surroundings.

6º ¿Como ves el Light Painting Español y sus artistas a nivel general?

How do you see Light Painting Spanish and its artists on a general level?

Me parece que España tiene una vasta cantidad de lightpainters fuertes.  También, los artistas españoles suelen mezclar modelos y elementos humanos con light painting en sus fotos más que en Inglaterra (posiblemente a causa del buen tiempo).  Para mi esto caracteriza el estilo español.

Spain seems to have a higher concentration of quality light painters than a lot of countries.  Equally, Spanish artists seem to use models a lot more than we do in the UK (possibly due to the better weather) which gives the scene a distinct style.

7º ¿Cuál es ese proyecto que siempre has tenido en tu mente pero que nunca te has llegado a poner a trabajar en ello?

What is this project that you have always had in your mind but that you have never gotten to work on it?

Me encantaría trabajar sobre fotos que mezclan light painting con retratos o con la vía láctea, como el trabajo de Eric Pare, Effren Herrera y Carles Calero.

   I would love to work on shots mixing light painting and portraiture or milky way photography and portraiture, like the work of Eric Pare, Effren Herrera and Carles Calero.  

 

8º ¿Cuéntanos cuál es tu equipo fotográfico básico para practicar Light Painting?

Tell us which is your basic photographic equipment to practice Light Painting?

Mi equipo básico consista de

• Un paraguas LED
• Unas antorchas LED de llave
• Una antorcha LED de diez colores
• Varias metacrilicas
• Una pelota de ping pong

Por cierto, tengo también una cámara (Canon 80D), un trípode y una herramienta de rotación de cámara, unas bombas de humo, hilo luminoso….!

My standard light painting kit consists of

• An LED Umbrella
• A white LED finger light
• A ten colour led torch
• Various acrylic blades
• A ping pong ball!

9º ¿Cómo se toma tu familia tu pasión por el Light Painting ?

How does your family take your passion for Light Painting?

A mi novia le encanta explorar lugares abandonados así que no lo encuentra demasiado raro.  Por suerte, vivo en una ciudad donde hay muchos lugares buenos para practicar light painting bastante cerca por lo tanto no tengo que viajar demasiado para practicar mi pasatiempo.   

My girlfriend likes urban exploration so does not find it too weird! Fortunately I live in a city where there are good light painting locations fairly close by, so I don’t need to travel too much to practice my hobby.

10º ¿Cómo definirías tu técnica?

How would you define your technique?

Yo veo mi estilo como definido por la adición de elementos geométricos y elementos dibujados a mano en escenarios naturales, donde los alrededores son tan importantes como el light painting mismo.  Suelo enfocarme en el cuidado en el light painting y uso la simetría y composición fuerte. .  

I see my style as being defined by adding geometric and hand drawn elements into natural scenes, where the surroundings are as important as the light painting itself.  I tend to focus on accuracy in the light painting and use strong symmetry and composition.

12º ¿Cuál es tu sueño fotográficamente hablando?

What is your dream photographically speaking?

Me encantaría hacer un paseo de Light Painting por Europa para hacer colaboraciones con los artistas nativos que admiro en sus lugares favoritos.  

I would love to do a tour of Europe, collaborating with all the local light painters that I admire in their favorite locations.
